How to Use Surfboard Repair Resin Properly

A tiny rail crack can look harmless on the beach, then turn into a soggy, heavy board after one more session. Knowing how to use surfboard repair resin means you can seal a small ding properly, protect the foam core and keep your board ready for the next swell.
Most minor repairs are well within reach at home, provided you use the right resin for your board and give every stage enough time. Rushing the cure, sanding before the resin has hardened or using polyester resin on an epoxy board can turn a five-minute fix into a far bigger job.
Start by matching the resin to your surfboard
This is the decision that matters most. A traditional PU surfboard has a polyurethane foam blank with a polyester resin and fibreglass outer layer. It needs polyester repair resin. An epoxy board uses an EPS foam core and epoxy resin construction. It needs epoxy repair resin.
Never apply polyester resin to an EPS or epoxy board. Polyester resin can react with EPS foam and melt it, leaving a much larger cavity beneath the damaged area. Epoxy resin is generally safe on either construction, but it is best to match the original board construction whenever possible for a consistent finish and cure.
If you are unsure what your board is made from, check its model details, ask the shaper or look for markings around the stringer and fin boxes. Epoxy boards are often lighter and may carry EPS or epoxy labelling, but do not rely on appearance alone. When in doubt, use an epoxy-specific repair product or get advice before opening the resin.
You will also see UV-cure repair resin. This is convenient for quick, sunny-day repairs because it hardens under UV light. It is ideal for very small surface cracks and shallow dings, but it still needs to match your board construction. Standard catalysed resin gives you more working time and is often a better choice for deeper repairs, especially when the British weather is doing its usual thing.
What you need before using surfboard repair resin
Set up somewhere dry, sheltered and well ventilated. Resin fumes are not something to work around in a bedroom, kitchen or closed garage. A shed with airflow or a covered outdoor workspace is a better option, as long as rain, sand and falling leaves cannot land in the repair.
For a straightforward ding, gather your repair resin, hardener if required, mixing cup, mixing stick, masking tape, sandpaper, a craft knife or small blade, disposable gloves and a clean cloth. For a crack that has broken through the glass, you will also need a small piece of fibreglass cloth. Acetone can be useful for cleaning tools, but keep it off EPS foam and do not use it as a substitute for properly drying the board.
Wear nitrile gloves and avoid getting resin on your skin. Sanding cured resin and fibreglass creates fine dust, so use a suitable dust mask and eye protection for that stage. It is not glamorous surf maintenance, but it is far better than itching through dinner after handling glass fibres.
How to use surfboard repair resin step by step
1. Dry the board completely
Take the board out of the water and inspect the damage before doing anything else. If water has entered the foam, the repair must wait until the board is fully dry. You may notice moisture weeping from a crack, a dark patch around the ding or extra weight in the board.
Leave the board in a dry, shaded place with the damaged area facing down where possible. Do not bake it in direct heat or leave it in a hot car. Excessive heat can affect the foam, weaken glue lines and cause pressure issues. A small rail crack might dry overnight, while a deeper puncture can need several days.
2. Remove loose glass and damaged foam
Once dry, use a blade or sandpaper to remove loose, cracked fibreglass around the ding. You need a stable edge for the new resin to bond to. Sand a small area around the repair so the surface is dull rather than shiny, then brush or wipe away all dust.
Be deliberate but not aggressive. Digging into sound foam creates extra filling work and can make the finished repair heavier. If the foam beneath the glass is crushed or missing, remove only the soft, damaged material.
3. Mask the area and mix carefully
Masking tape around the repair keeps excess resin from spreading across the board and reduces clean-up later. Leave enough room to feather the edge when sanding.
For two-part resin, follow the ratio printed on the kit exactly. Do not estimate the hardener by eye. Too little can leave resin tacky; too much can cause a fast, brittle cure and shorten the time you have to work. Mix slowly and thoroughly, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup, but avoid whipping air bubbles into the resin.
Temperature affects cure time. In a cold garage, resin can stay soft for much longer than expected. In warm conditions, it may start to gel quickly. Mix small batches so you are not racing against a cup of hardening resin.
4. Fill the ding in thin, controlled layers
For a shallow crack or chip, press the resin into the damaged area with a mixing stick and smooth it just proud of the board surface. A slightly raised repair is easier to sand flush than one that cures below the level of the surrounding glass.
For a deeper dent with exposed foam, fill the void gradually. Thick pools of resin can heat up as they cure, add unnecessary weight and leave a soft centre. Some repair kits include a lightweight filler, which can be mixed into suitable resin for rebuilding a missing section before the outer glass layer goes on.
If the fibreglass is split, cut a patch that overlaps the damaged section by roughly 1 to 2 cm. Lay it over wet resin, then add enough resin to saturate the cloth until it turns transparent. Do not flood it. The aim is to wet out the fibres, not create a thick blob that needs an hour of sanding.
5. Let it cure without interference
Leave the board flat and protected from dust while the resin cures. Follow the repair kit's stated cure time, then give it longer if the conditions are cool or damp. Resin that feels hard on top may still be soft underneath, particularly in a deep repair.
UV resin needs direct UV exposure to cure. Bright sunshine works well, but a cloudy day may not provide enough strength or speed. A UV lamp can offer more control. Keep UV resin out of sunlight while you are applying it, otherwise it can start curing before you have smoothed the repair.
6. Sand it flush and seal the finish
When fully hard, remove the masking tape and sand the repair gradually. Start with a medium grit such as 120 to level a raised edge, then move through finer grades for a smoother finish. Use light pressure and keep checking the rail or deck line as you work. It is easy to sand through the surrounding glass if you focus on one spot for too long.
A small, clean repair does not need to look factory-fresh to be watertight. If you want a neater finish, apply a thin final coat of resin, let it cure and wet sand with finer paper. Avoid taking a freshly repaired board straight into the sea just because the surface feels dry. Give the resin its full cure time first.
Common repair mistakes that cost more later
The biggest mistake is sealing moisture inside the board. Resin will cover a wet ding, but it will not solve the water already in the foam. That trapped moisture can lead to staining, added weight and further delamination.
Another common issue is treating every crack like a cosmetic scratch. If you can catch a fingernail in it, see exposed foam or notice any flex around the area, it needs proper attention. The same applies to damage near a fin box, leash plug, tail edge or a heavily stressed rail. These areas can need a more substantial repair than resin alone.
Finally, do not confuse a quick fix with a permanent structural repair. UV resin is excellent for saving a session when used correctly, but a major crease, loose fin box or soft section of deck is a job for an experienced repairer. There is no shame in protecting a good board rather than experimenting on its most vulnerable area.
